I don’t really need more colored pencils. But my daughter does! ? Well, the thing is, I like to draw together with her and I have a bit higher demands when it comes to the quality of the pencils. But I don’t want her to use pencils that are very toxic so I have been researching some cheaper alternatives that are highly pigmented and safe to use for both children and grownups.
Harry from the Art Gear Guide have reviewed them in this article and the company seems to be very serious. Other reviewers also have given them a high rating and some characteristics interested me. They are apparantly quite smudge proof, which is good for kids. I don’t want a lot of mess on her little hands, both for her safety and also because those hands have a tendancy to be everywhere. Another reviewer on Amazon also pointed out that they are somewhat soluble with water. That’s actually a characteristic that I like also, because then you can blend without solvents but you still get that colored pencil look instead of it all turning into watercolor as it would with a watercolor pencil. They are not tested for lightfastness, but for this purpose, it’s not that important. I can scan and print a drawing if it would come out extra nice.
So I wrote to the company and asked if they were safe to use for my 4 year old. An hour later they responded:
“Hello Sarah, We hope you are well and safe.
Thank you for getting in touch. We certainly appreciate your interest in our colour Pencils. While the lead of the pencils may have some pigments that contain some chemicals, it is found to contain no known toxic substances in sufficient quantities to be harmful to the human body.
Personally, our advice is to not ingest the pencils or part of them in any way. If it’s for children’s use, only let them use with adult supervision, make sure that they do not ingest the pencils in any way, do not eat while colouring, and wash hands their hands properly after their activity.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have additional questions or concerns. I’m always happy to help! Have a great day and take care! ?
Kind regards, Ed, Castle Arts“
I mean, Isn’t that just wonderful? He also attached some coloring sheets for me and my daughter. Well, that’s the way to deal with a costumer! I actually ordered one of their smaller Van Gogh 24 set now to try out. Will probably end up buying the whole 120 set! ?
